Hytale

Hytale is a sandbox game that was previously under development at Hypixel Studios, where I worked as a software engineer. In 2025, after a long development timeline, the project was cancelled and Hypixel Studios was closed.

Just five months later, in November 2025, the original founders of Hypixel Studios successfully closed a deal with Riot to re-acquire the project in order to finally deliver it to fans around the world through early access.

During my seven years with the original studio, after initially joining the team to build its website and supporting backend services, I worked on many aspects of the game, including both its original engine (consisting of a C# client and Java server—notably the version the current team ultimately returned to and shipped) and the C++ engine that was built on top of Flecs.

Highlights in my work on the game include:

  • UI programming for the HUD and creative tools
  • Contributions to combat features and effects
  • Extensive work on the game’s custom behaviour planning framework, including development of new behaviours and debug visualisation tools
  • Design and implementation of a system for attaching screen-space UI elements to world entities
  • Planning and implementation of a data-driven crafting framework
  • Contributions to the world generation system
